I've read Metamorphosis (the novel Kaneki was referencing) and it eerily parallels TG. For example, after a while Gregor Samsa began to enjoy scuttling up and down the walls as a cockroach...

@aki-is-a-dork Definitely worth the read; it's one of my favorite books. It has that creepy-ironic feeling that Tokyo Ghoul gives off. Only 50ish pages, too :)

@Choco-sweet It's directly referenced in chapter 2 of Tokyo Ghoul (not in :re), but I think there's a small smattering of references in the chapters after.
