The war is over. As society attempts to rebuild itself orphaned Eli Reese, who spent the war hiding and running for his life, is put in a catchall institution for children misplaced and damaged by the war. There he meets a group of kids who did much more than hide and run; there's the silent Kyle, the crying Nacio, the laughing Annie, the stoic Ben, the broken Marie, the child Leo, and Ezekiel, the boy who made them soldiers and led them through their first war. As tensions heighten Eli must choose to trust the fledging government or Ezekiel, who sees another war on the horizon. His decision could cost him more than his life.
