Something about knowing that there were an infinite number of bodies out there that were destined to be alone just as he was, unable to ever get close to another without a portion of the universe crashing down around them, made Thranduil feel understood, as if he wasn’t, perhaps, a monster.
But he was just deluding himself with that thought.
