southern gothic 1950s au. the old woman at the end of the street swears she's seen them together late at night. she swears she's watched their silhouettes through the lace curtains of the schoolteacher's kitchen window. she swears she saw the town lawyer drive her home after an evening at the bar only to have her serve him sweet tea as though it weren't anything inappropriate -- and it was ! it was ! she swears ( on her life ! with a hit of her cane to the ground ! ) she watched them carry out a heavy, rolled-up sheet together, stained the blackest of blacks in the dim night light, and it was only two days later the schoolteacher's husband was declared missing.
