If it is not a man lying at the root of the harm done by women in these stories, then it is usually revenge. There is a tradition in Japanese stories and pictures, for ghosts to take the form of women who need some kind of deed performed before they can rest in peace. Although they play the role of the antagonists, they are not depicted as evil. True, they inflict pain on others, but quite often it is because they or their families have been wronged. "Hell hath no fury like a women scorned." But this is not the case for wronged female ghosts in Japan. Ghosts, even scary ones, are not usually bad, just terribly unhappy.
