Travel back in time to the early and mid-20th century, when troupes of traveling "native islanders" entertained the crowds in side shows at carnivals and attractions across the land. They may have been from Hawaii and Polynesia, they may have been from Indonesia or The Philippines, many of them may have been brunettes from New Jersey or Iowa who had never touched the shores of Hawaii. They may have actually performed Hawaiian hula, some danced "the hooch", and some may have just wiggled around the stage. These songs all come from my personal vinyl collection of more than 2,500 Hawaiian records and they represent the type of music one was likely to have heard at such side shows.
