Peer is a teenage boy who loves technology and cold, hard facts. He starts the story as an apprentice to an inventor in the kingdom of Juara, but soon learns that he actually has magical lineage through his late mother. Peer is chosen to be the next Court Sorcerer, and starts a new apprenticeship at the palace. As a "man of science", Peer is not happy about this turn of events. At least his twin brother, Ajo, and his lifelong friend, Zipi, are welcomed to join him at the palace. He'll really need their help with all this magic business, especially when a war starts, and magic seems to be the only way to bring about peace.
