Because, y'know, it's hard. You can't live up to the expectations of your overbearing father, nobody in the kingdom respects you, your ambition ends up being your own downfall all the time, magic is way more fickle then it has any right to be, and to top it off, you're actually becoming really good friends with that small girl with the magic amulet that you could use to take over the kingdom.
