Hardly Strictly Bluegrass 2013 Preview

Notes

Getting ready for HSB 13 with another eclectic preview mix of old and new. The HSB regulars will be joined this year by big names like Bonnie Raitt and Neko Case who are sure to draw the crowds. But HSB really thrives on lesser known bands like Joy Kills Sorrow. It's all free in Golden Gate Park - October 4th-6th.

Thanks so much for this mix. Lovin' it! I was unaware of HSB, but I looked up this year's lineup and there's a TON of my favorite artists performing this year. Hard to believe it's free. People living close to the area are lucky, indeed. Thanks for including songs by Tumblewood Wanderers, The Wood Brothers, Warren Hood Band, and especially Jesse DeNatale - none of whom I had heard before. I looked everywhere for a digital download of DeNatale's Soul Parade but never found one. I finally gave in and ordered a used CD, even though it cost way too much - I just had to have it!

You'll have to make a trip to San Francisco one October and join in the fun. I'm struggling to figure out which stages to be at - too many great bands. (Nice problem to have) BTW - I just discovered the band Low. Wow! The mix now starts with a cover of a Rihanna tune - Stay. Just beautiful. Be sure to check it out if you haven't heard them.

Yes, I've heard some Low, but have not yet fully checked out their discography. Great addition to the mix. I'm sorry I can't offer much sympathy for your 'big problem' of struggling to figure out which HSB stages to be at this weekend! Like you say - nice problem to have. But you have to, have to, have to go hear Shovels & Rope. I may be preaching to the choir if you already know about them, but they are fantastic. I read comments by a reviewer on Amazon that severely criticized their self-titled album, saying the studio production ruined their sound and lacked the excitement of their live performances and pointed the reader to a video of the band's live performance of the song 'Hail, Hail.' I was surprised to read such negativity about the album because I rate it as one of 2012's best. I have not seen them live, but after viewing this Youtube video, I see what the reviewer was talking about! Have fun at the show this weekend! (I sure am curious what Peter Rowan sounds like with that Tibetan singer!)
