Notes
The invention of the chuckwagon is attributed to Charles Goodnight in 1866, "chuck" being a slang word for food. He modified a studebaker wagon to suit the needs of cowboys driving cattle across long distances. A chuckwagon’s food included beans, salted meats, coffee, and sourdough biscuits. Water barrels were attached along with slings carrying wood to cook the food. The "cookie" that ran the wagon was 2nd in command and would act as cook, dentist, banker and barber. Thank you for listening!
