Reminding us of the 60 watt light bulb, Scottish P.Eng. James Watts in the late 1800s discovered that a healthy horse could uprear about 150 lbs. 220 feet in 60 seconds, equating to 33,000 foot lbs. per minute. Further formulations found that 1 horsepower as a unit of mechanical energy (745.7 watts) was required to lift 550 lbs. 1 foot per second.
