Notes
A performance of Carnatic (South Indian classical) music is called a kutcheri. "Kutcheri" doesn't simply mean "concert"; rather, it is a concert format that developed in the early 1900s. It was designed as a vocal concert, and the vocalist has full control, accompanied by a violinist, mridangam player, and a ghatam player.
The kutcheri format highlights a variety of different ragas and compositions. In my annotations, I try to give an explanation of the role each composition plays in the kutcheri.
For more information, history, and important critiques of the kutcheri, take a look at my blog post: http://bit.ly/2aFxdQJ
Note: A real kutcheri would feature more compositions, with more extensive improvisation.
