“How on earth did you get so close to me.”
“I’ve been told I can be annoyingly persistent.”
Mira noticeably stiffened.
“Who told you you were annoying?”
Aric paused for a moment, struggling to bite back a grin. She continued to stare at him awaiting an answer, completely unaware of the irony she’d imbued. The way she could so seamlessly dismiss their friendship one minute, and then jump to his defense the next amazed and charmed him all at once.
In that moment Aric let her in, and it was both the best and worst decision he could've ever made.

Or, the one where the staid immortal and the time traveler with ebony hair and a smile like malice fell in love. It wasn't half as pretty as they'd lead you to believe, more of a mutual push and pull, but at least it was something all their own.
