summer with the whitmans

Notes

Watching The Darjeeling Limited by myself on the first sunny day of the year has become something of a tradition. This film has a wonderfully rambling quality, shifting between the superficial and profound. The beautiful cinematography, scenery and references to the films of Satyajit Ray make it vibrant and compelling, with the soundtrack meandering from traditional Sikh prayers to classic tracks by 70s icons like The Kinks and Cat Stevens. Seeing the slow reconciliation of the Whitman brothers makes me laugh and cry.

This playlist is a mixture of the actual soundtrack and some other bright, summery songs that I love and make me feel like I'm travelling on that very train across India with Francis, Peter and Jack. .
