There was once a human born on this earth who was told to vanquish the monster that haunted people’s dreams. You will be a hero, they said; heroes are good, and they are celebrated, and they are loved. And this human wanted to be loved, so they fought, and killed, and bled, and sacrificed; but no one told the melancholic truth about being a hero. That when you went home at night, no amount of scrubbing would take the blood off of your hands. That when the war was over, there would be no such things as heroes. That maybe you weren’t vanquishing the monster — you were becoming it.
