@vegancannibal My guess is it's about how her parents utterly reject the atypical world, and therefore Mark for his powers and Joan for her passion for that world. In the later seasons we learn that they had a traumatizing experience with a deadly atypical, and pretty much completely cut Mark and Joan out of their lives because of that trauma. I also suspect the song portrays some of Joan's guilt for failing her little brother and the pain of losing him. If you read their Secret Journal on the Bonus Content page on the Bright Sessions website, you can really see how close they were and how much Joan treasured him, which makes what happens to them even more heartbreaking.
