Happiness and good deeds require true heart, something we are taught should be used sparingly. We know that opening our heart to others could potentially subject it to damage, and in fear of that risk, we keep it to ourselves.
Within war, it's impossible to take risks without the chance of being killed. It's easier to close your mind off to emotion and depend on instinct rather than witness and intake what's going on around you. Those who cannot turn themselves numb will not survive.
