Notes
This mix accompanies my book All Hopped Up and Ready To Go: Music from the Streets of New York 1927-77. It follows on from Chapter 3, “The Harlem Hit Parade,” and covers the transition of the New York vocal groups from the gospel and rhythm and blues style of singing, as profiled in that chapter, into something that much more vibrant, more raw, more youthful… ultimately, more teenage. Includes tracks by the Chantels, Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers, and the Harptones among others.
