The theremin is an early electronic musical instrument controlled without physical contact by the performer and was named after its Russian inventor, Proffesor Léon Theremin, who patented the device in 1928. It has an eerie atmospheric sound and was used in movie soundtracks such as Spellbound, The Lost Weekend, and The Day the Earth Stood Still. .
